چکیده

Detecting botnet behaviors in networks is a popular topic in the current research literature. The problem of detection of P2P botnets has been denounced as one of the most difficult ones, and this is even sounder when botnets use existing P2P networks infrastructure (parasite P2P botnets). The majority of the detection proposals available at present are based on monitoring network traffic to determine the potential existence of command-and-control communications (C&C) between the bots and the botmaster. As a different and novel approach, this paper introduces a detection scheme which is based on modeling the evolution of the number of peers sharing a resource in a P2P network over time. This allows to detect abnormal behaviors associated to parasite P2P botnet resources in this kind of environments. We perform extensive experiments on Mainline network, from which promising detection results are obtained while patterns of parasite botnets are tentatively

BotOnus: an online unsupervised method for Botnet detection

Botnets are recognized as one of the most dangerous threats to the Internet infrastructure. They are used for malicious activities such as launching distributed denial of service attacks, sending spam, and leaking personal information. Existing botnet detection methods produce a number of good ideas, but they are far from complete yet, since most of them cannot detect botnets in an early stage ...

Towards Automated Detection of Peer-to-Peer Botnets: On the Limits of Local Approaches

State-of-the-art approaches for the detection of peer-topeer (P2P) botnets are on the one hand mostly local and on the other hand tailored to specific botnets involving a great amount of human time, effort, skill and creativity. Enhancing or even replacing this labor-intensive process with automated and, if possible, local network monitoring tools is clearly extremely desirable. To investigate ...

The Next Generation Botnet Attacks And Defenses

A “botnet” is a network of compromised computers (bots) that are controlled by an attacker (botmasters). Botnets are one of the most serious threats to today’s Internet; they are the root cause of many current Internet attacks, such as email spam, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks , click fraud, etc. There have been many researches on how to detect, monitor, and defend against botnet...

Botnet Detection by Monitoring Similar Communication Patterns

Botnet is most widespread and occurs commonly in today‘s cyber attacks, resulting in serious threats to our network assets and organization’s properties. Botnets are collections of compromised computers (Bots) which are remotely controlled by its originator (BotMaster) under a common Command-andControl (C&C) infrastructure. They are used to distribute commands to the Bots for malicious activiti...
